NCI State of the Workforce

This is a national survey that collects data on the Direct Support Professional (DSP) workforce providing direct supports to adults (age 18 and over) with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The survey is administered by the National Core Indicators (NCI) program, which is a collaboration between the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) and the Human Services Research Institute (HSRI).

The survey collects data on a variety of topics related to the DSP workforce, including:

  • Turnover rates

  • Vacancy rates

  • Wages and benefits

  • Recruitment and retention strategies

  • Job satisfaction

  • Stress levels

  • Work-life balance

The data from the survey is used to help states examine workforce challenges, identify areas for further investigation, benchmark their workforce data, measure improvements made through policy or programmatic changes, and compare their state data to those of other states and the NCI average
